Messe Frankfurt announced on 27 October 2026 that Heimtextil, the leading international trade fair for home and contract textiles, will introduce a special showcase called the Functional Futures Lab at its January 2027 edition. Curated by Future Fabrics Expo, the Lab will sit in Hall 4.1 as the centrepiece of the Interior.Architecture.Hospitality area and is aimed mainly at architects, interior designers and hotel and contract buyers.

The exhibits are grouped into three colour-coded areas – Circular Systems, Living Nature and Natural Performance – and selected on circularity and basic sustainability criteria. Properties on show include temperature response, durability, flame resistance and antibacterial effects. Examples named by the organiser include upholstery made from untreated wool fibres and living root systems designed to resist fire without toxic chemicals, durable bio-based composites, and dyes made from food waste. Each exhibit will be labelled with its technology readiness level, so visitors can see which materials are prototypes and which are already on the market.

“Performance is a key topic for the future of the textile industry,” said Olaf Schmidt, Vice President Textiles & Textile Technologies at Messe Frankfurt. The Lab fits the fair’s trend theme for 2027/28, “Home-Maxxing – The Performance of Everyday Living”, developed with the Milan design platform Alcova and announced in September. Its three directions – Staged Competence, Inside, Out and Hyper Presence – range from visible technical codes and exposed zips and straps to tactile natural fibres, patina and warm earth tones such as rust, ochre and burnt orange.

Messe Frankfurt expects around 2,900 exhibitors in 2027, in line with the previous edition, and describes the market as under pressure, with buyers paying closer attention to price, quality, functionality and durability and looking for partners that can reliably deliver agreed quality and volumes.
